Robert Liston, a noted surgeon who during his most famous surgery, managed a mortality rate of 300%.
How? First, he amputated the leg of the intended patient in under 2.5 minutes. The patient died from gangrene (not uncommon at the time). During the same surgery he also amputated the fingers of his young assistant, who also died from gangrene. In his exuberance he slashed through the coat tails of a spectator, who was so terrified that the knife had pierced his vitals, he dropped dead from fright.
Now, I don’t want to completely bash the man, so it should be known he actually was a very accomplished surgeon, known for his quick amputations when anesthesia was not yet available.
